Weekend Wanderings – 15th & 16th Feb

Hot, hot, hot. Plenty of heat and rain, fantastic stuff. There are many entries to get in this week, Maritzburg Marathon, some of the stage trail runs (3 Cranes, Lesotho, Wild Rides, Durban Ultra, Durban 1/2 Iron Man, Deloittes Marathon etc) so get with the programme, many of these do not accept late entries.

This weekend there are a few roadie events, as well as the usual MTB and trails, but we can always make our own trails, no need for road closures and police, they are all in CT anyway looking after the self important politician types and their friends.

TW Mchunu Marathon – Sun 16th (Estcourt)

10km, 21 km and 42 km in Estcourt, starting 6 am so get there early, I have no idea of the route but I am sure the route is very undulating in Estcourt.

Zabalaza Marathon – Sun 16th (Cato Ridge)

There is a 10 km, 21 km and 42 km here as well, yes same day as the last one only 100 km up the road. This 42 does 2 laps of the 21 km course and is a nice running course, taking in much of the comrades route for those who want practice.

Wartburg Classic – Sat 15th (Wartburg)

This is one of my favourites, very nice routes and you can set yourself up to do both disciplines as  duathlon, or just the trail run or MTB events. Usual MTB on offer being kids race 10 km (R50), 25 km (R110), 45 km (R150) and ultra 65 km (R180), with a R30 surcharge on late entries. The 65 km route is not to be sneezed at although quite quick, but lots of hills and plenty lovely single track. There is also 7km trail run (R70) and 14 km (R100) starting at 6 am early bells. Combined is the duathlon (7 km and 25 km R140) or 14 km and 25 km (R140), which would be my personal pick for the weekend, starting with the trail, that is why so early so you can get back for the 8 am cycle start and not get lost. There is normally beer etc. after the race, so a full day, leaving Sunday off to go and do the next event.

Burg Wheelers Compendium – Sun 16th (Michaelhouse)

50 km (R240) and 80 km (R320) road races from Michaelhouse up and down the R103 to Midmar and notties, good for those in training for the Cape cycle tour or who just want a mindless jaunt up and down the road, can do on MTB so get in there.

There are also a couple of those lap events on MTB on the North Coast for those into that sort of timed event. As usual, support your local Park Run if not doing an event on Saturday, organise mates for a run/ride and braai Sunday, either at one of the many commercial venues, or just on your own.

You are welcome to park and run or ride from our shop into Midmar or into the Midlands, Something Used opposite Midmar Dam Gates, have a coffee or cooldrink and crunchies after. There is plenty parking and you can browse our furniture whilst sipping cappucino.

get out there, run like you mean it, keep and eye on your front wheel and stay healthy.
